The printed sleeve, which previously covered the entire bottle has been reduced by 50%. A move that means Ribena bottles can be sorted into the clear plastic waste stream to be recycled more easily, and ultimately start a renewed life as another bottle.
The redesign makes Ribena the UK’s largest soft drinks brand to use bottles which are 100% recycled and 100% bottle to bottle recyclable and will subsequently save more than 200 tonnes of plastic each year.

Achieving 100% recycled bottles which are able to be recycled back into a bottle is a key step toward truly sustainable plastic, and an important part of our own journey towards full circularity and net zero emissions. Simplifying the packaging of our drinks to help encourage consumers to recycle is just one of our many investments in making soft drinks more sustainable. From climate-change resilient blackcurrants to promoting biodiversity on our farms, we’re determined to promote sustainable practice from bush to bottle.

I am very pleased to see SBF GB&I taking this important step to ensure that all their Ribena bottles are fully recyclable and made from 100% recycled plastic. It is this kind of innovation that we want to see to create a more circular economy for our waste and resources, with more materials being recycled and reused and less being consigned to landfill or incineration. Through new powers in our landmark Environment Bill, we will introduce a deposit return scheme for single-use drinks containers and ensure that companies take more responsibility for the packaging they produce

The two-year project costing £1.6M is a big move for the brand but not the only thing helping to make Ribena more sustainable. Launching the UK’s first bottle to be made from 100% recycled plastic in 2007, trialling paper straws on its cartons, harvesting the world’s first climate-resilient blackcurrant and acting against biodiversity loss, are just a few of the ways Ribena is striving for sustainability from bush to bottle.
